Motor Services are techniques and training provided to students who have difficulties with fine motor (i.e. buttoning, writing, using switches), gross motor (running, jumping, throwing a ball), or visual perceptual skills' deficits.
Motor services are often needed by young children who are delayed in their motor development or by older students who have severe coordination or balance difficulties or who are significantly incapacitated by neuromuscular disorders.
Motor services may be provided directly at school by a Physical Therapist (PT), an Occupational Therapist (OT), or a Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA). In addition to providing direct services to students, these professionals also provide significant support to teaching staff and others by advising and consulting regarding students' needs.
