Self-Contained Programs

Self-contained programs are offered for students whose needs surpass that which can be adequately met in general education or general education combined with resource room services.

Students in self-contained programs usually have many goals and objectives on their IEP's and are working on other areas in addition to academics.  Some students are working on self-conrol and behavior regulation, others are working on social skills.  Some students have significant medical needs.  Some students are significantly disabled--so much so that they would not be expected to make significant gains on their IEP if only offered general education and resource support classroom services.  For those students, in order to make best use of their time and preserve their positive attitude for school, they are taught subject matter in ways which they find very engaging--but which is not appropriate for the general education setting.  For example, teaching a developmentally delayed 4th grader his address may involve signing, singing, music and dance.  This multi-modal approach holds his attention and helps him remember.  As this approach would be distracting to many students in the general education classroom, such specialized instruction is best carried out in a separate classroom.    Additionally, when students do not understand what is going on in the general education classroom, some may act out which can become socially isolating for them and is disruptive to the educational process.

District-wide self-contained programs are available at Eatonville Developmental Preschool, Eatonville Elementary School, Eatonville Middle School and Eatonville High School.
