Eatonville School District
Special Education

Special Education is a service--not a place.  Within the scope of special education services some students may only need a few minutes per week of services where others' needs may be quite a bit more.

Special education services are offered after a comprehensive evaluation shows the student has met the "three-prong test:"
1) The student has a disability
2) The student has an adverse educational impact caused by the disability
3) The student requires specially designed instruction in order to make adequate progress

The student must meet all three criteria in order to be eligible for special education services.

Following eligibility determination, an Individualized Education Program (IEP) is developed by the IEP team.  Although the draft is usually written by the teacher, parental imput as well as that of other team members is vital.  Once the team has agreed upon the appropriate goals and objectives, the team then decides the amount and types of services the student requires.   Federal and state law tell us the services must be provided in the least restrictive environment appropriate for the student.

On the left side bar, you can review the "menu" of most common service delivery modes in Eatonville.  This is virtually identical to options available in surrounding districts.

You will also see the Procedural Safeguards (8/07) and Addendum (1/09) which informs parents of their students rights.  In addition to placing them on our web site, we offer these document to parents of students receiving special services at least once per year.  We hope you will become familiar with these documents.
